I often grab a camera and go down the beach. I check out the sunset at “that time of night” or in the morning. Maybe there’s movement on the beach.

If there’s people there, I have to ask them if it’s alright for me to take a photo. If they say ‘yes’, then I wander off to the place where I think will get the right tilt of the sunlight on the water and take a few snaps. I try to gauge the emotion that’s there. I look for a narrative as the fishermen and other people on the beach go about doing whatever they are doing. They know that I am there, but I’ve promised they won’t be visible any more than they agree to be, and that is important to me. Largely I am ignored and easily forgotten. The photographs do the talking for us all.

When I go back with my raw camera files to edit the photographs ready for display, I always keep that in mind. I work around enhancing the emotion and the ambience of a scene to make something truly memorable, that people will look at and see the feeling behind it.
